There is no safe natural or artificial fluoride chemical for use in water, not even the naturally occurring calcium fluoride (chemical symbol Ca). The addition of toxic waste fluoride to the lakes and rivers via waste effluent is a hazard for the environment and a health risk for all living organisms. As a water additive, it affects everything.
Think of any medication: some people may have adverse reactions that may be serious. Some may even die, think of the VIOXX story (http://www.vioxx-lawsuit.ca/). Here is a drug company that “knowingly misrepresented or failed to disclose” important information.
Fluoride’s impact dwarfs VIOXX because everybody is getting dosed with a toxic fluoride chemical passed off as tooth medicine whether they want it or not, whether they need it or not. There are millions of people getting fluoride, and this is a very reactive agent – it interferes with all biochemical processes in some way: cellular enzyme production is known to get altered. We would not even know if some child died due fluoride reactions. No one is responsible. No one is checking: there is no protocol for verifying if fluoride is implicated or not in any illness or condition in spite of over 60 years of putting this stuff in the water as a tooth medicine. That, to my mind, is irresponsible. If you don’t look, you don’t find. Yet promoters say that surely, problems would have shown up after so many years of use. Well they have, but they are not looking for any connection because they would find all kinds of problems that would mean the end of fluoridation.
So we have to be responsible for our own health in this case – this is an absurd, outdated practice, that primarily benefits the producers of this toxic waste (silicofluoride) and puts your health and mine at risk.
So what are these new findings? Well first some basic facts on fluoride.
There is no benefit to ingesting it. It was declared in the 1990s by the ADA and the CDC that fluoride’s benefits are topical, fluoridated toothpaste will do just fine.
The American Dental Association and Health Canada both warn against giving infants and young children under the age of 6 months fluoridated water due to the increased risk of dental fluorosis, yet promoters still deny that this fluorosis is a problem, they say it’s just a cosmetic effect. Yeah, right! How stupid do they think we are to swallow that one? However, maybe we are if we agree to swallow water with a fluoride chemical added to it.
Areas that have removed fluoride have shown no discernible change in the rate of dental cavities in spite of claims to the contrary. These facts alone suggest that justification for mass fluoridation is suspect.
We are exposed to fluoride from multiple sources and dosage is nearly impossible to ascertain. Fluoride accumulates in tissue and the environment; no one has any idea what the long term consequences are.
On the back of any toothpaste containing fluoride is a warning against swallowing, mostly because of the fluoride in the toothpaste, yet we swallow fluoride with our water. How does that make any sense?
People with kidney problems are at a greater risk of developing complications from fluoride toxicity than the general population. Ask any medical personnel involved with dialysis patients if they would allow fluoridated water to be used for their patients.
There are many peer reviewed studies showing that there are indeed risks associated with fluoride in drinking water, including behavioral changes (hyperactivity), IQ levels, and other brain related problems, not the least of which is Alzheimer’s.
Fluoride levels are elevated in waterways and river systems in areas that practice fluoridation which interfere with sensitive plants and fish spawning.
Fluoride accumulates in the pineal gland of the brain to levels that impair its function.
Fluoride interferes with enzyme production, as well as iodine production and utilization, and production of human growth hormone.
It is actually a highly toxic substance with side effects that occur in other places in the body. We really should not be asking dentists, or having them present about fluoride’s effects on the body, they are generally poorly informed and the pharmacology and toxicology of fluoride is not their specialty, theirs is all about teeth, and they are being told to stick to teeth by their professional trade Associations, that they do not need to know anything about the science behind the products or techniques used in their profession.
Asking a dental professional about fluoride effects on the body is like asking a car mechanic the physics behind the internal combustion engine. It might surprise you to know that there are now over 4,000 professionals demanding that consumers of fluoride know the risks to the rest of the body, before they consume it in water. A good place to start is the professional perspectives (http://fluorideaction.ca/professional-perspectives/) video or the EPA scientists union article (http://fluorideaction.ca/2011/03/18/epa-scientists-riled-by-gag-order-on-fluoride/) for good information on the risks of fluoride and what scientists and toxicologists have discovered recently.
“the implementation of this fluoride program is illegal and violates The Safe Drinking Water Act.” EPA Scientists Union. http://fluorideaction.ca/2011/03/18/epa-scientists-riled-by-gag-order-on-fluoride/.
Recent, peer-reviewed toxicity data, when applied to EPA’s standard method for controlling risks from toxic chemicals, require an immediate halt to the use of the nation’s drinking water reservoirs as disposal sites for the toxic waste of the phosphate fertilizer industry.
Fluorine is a highly reactive element, it combines readily with whatever is available. Chemically, fluorine is one of the strongest oxidizing agents known (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxidizing_agent), and is similar to, but even more reactive and dangerous than, elemental chlorine. The high affinity for electrons of fluorine leads it to direct reactions with all other elements in which the reaction has been attempted, including the so-called noble gases helium, neon and argon.
Fluorine is always attached to some other molecule. It does not exist in isolation for very long on earth. In fact when it does, it is because human beings have induced it. It is commonly found attached to Magnesium as magnesium fluoride (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnesium_fluoride) or Calcium in water as in Calcium fluoride (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium_fluoride), CaF2, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium). It is called fluorite in this arrangement and the mineral is used to increase the fluidity of slag used in smelting aluminium.
In fact Alcoa is a big producer of industrial waste derived fluorides [and so is the phosphate fertilizer manufacturing industry, the latter being the most pernicious of those waste products used in water fluoridation].
This brings us to unpleasant truth number one. What is in our water is literally toxic waste, and it is not as pure as it should be, it contains contaminants like lead, arsenic and Mercury. It is known as Fluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluorosilicic_acid) a waste of phosphate fertilizer production in the mining process for the Phosphate, also known as hexafluorosilicic acid [hydrofluorosilicic acid and many other synonyms – the chemical formula gives it away]. From it we also get Sodium fluorosilicate (Na2SiF6) a powder or very fine crystal that is easier to ship. It’s toxic waste, it’s claimed to be good for preventing cavities but it is still toxic waste. It is as stated elsewhere, a protoplasmic poison.
There are actually plenty of questions about its effectiveness as a cavity preventative. It’s claim of safety and effectiveness is exaggerated and repeated with a kind of religious zeal until it is believed as fact. The scientists at the EPA have stated through their Union that they oppose fluoride, regarding the effectiveness of fluoride in reducing dental cavities as questionable at best; there has not been any double-blind study of fluoride effectiveness in preventing tooth decay.
There have been many, many small scale, selective publications on this issue that proponents cite to justify fluoridation, but the largest and most comprehensive study, one done by dentists trained by the National Institute of Dental Research, on over 39,000 school children aged 5-17 years, shows no significant differences (in terms of decayed, missing and filled teeth – DMFT) of caries incidence in fluoridated, non-fluoridated and partially fluoridated communities. (http://www.fluoridation.com/epa2.htm#Reference 16).
Fluorides benefits are from contact with the tooth if at all, not from drinking it.
So the risks of drinking it are in fact unnecessary, and there may be more risks than we have been led to believe. One of the best sources of documentation of these risks can be found on the Second Look web site http://slweb.org/bibliography.html.
The biggest boosters of fluoride are the companies that produce over 40,000 tons (http://fluorideaction.ca/2011/03/14/amount-of-waste-fluoride-produced-in-the-us-each-year/) of this a year in the U.S. alone. A waste so toxic and lethal that it cannot be disposed of in water or anywhere else in the environment. That would be in violation of EPA guidelines, as well as the Government of Canada’s Environmental Protection Act. Yet it is put into our tap water as a medication, ostensibly to prevent tooth decay.
Yes it’s confusing, however it’s important to become an involved and informed citizen now more than ever in this burning issue that is causing untold suffering for many people!
