Why Drink Fluoride With Water

No disease has ever been linked to a fluoride deficiency. Humans can have perfectly good teeth without fluoride. As a matter of fact, most Western European countries have abandoned fluoridation and have experienced declining dental decay. Here are some reasons given by several countries for not fluoridating:

Germany: “Generally, in Germany fluoridation of drinking water is forbidden. The relevant German law allows exceptions to the fluoridation ban on application. The argumentation of the Federal Ministry of Health against a general permission of fluoridation of drinking water is the problematic nature of compulsory medication.
France: “Fluoride chemicals are not included in the list [of ‘chemicals for drinking water treatment’]. This is due to ethical as well as medical considerations.”
Belgium: “This water treatment has never been of use in Belgium and will never be (we hope so) into the future. The main reason for that is the fundamental position of the drinking water sector that it is not its task to deliver medicinal treatment to people. This is the sole responsibility of health services.”

On a rudimentary level, fluoridation is a political issue. Does the government have the right to administer medication? Fluoridation is unethical since individuals are not being asked for their informed consent prior to medication. This is standard practice for all medication worldwide, and one of the key reasons why most of Western Europe has ruled against fluoridation. As an added bonus, we are actually forced to pay for it.

But does it work? In no instances, especially in younger children, no fluoride has ever been shown to be conclusively useful, and the FDA has actually suggested that it could be harmful to infants. The largest survey ever conducted in the US (by the National Institute of Dental Research) conducted the largest survey of over 39,000 children from 84 communities and the results showed little difference in tooth decay among children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities.

Fluoride has never been approved by the FDA, an agency that has often sided with polluting corporations when regulating products that are toxic to humans. Besides, tooth decay comes from diet, not a lack of fluoride nor a lack of visits to dentists.

But naturally occurring fluoride is never added to the water, only silicofluorides, hazardous waste containing many other toxic pollutants from the phosphate fertilizer industries are used to artificially fluoridate water. Silicofluorides never occur naturally in nature, and they are more than 80 times more toxic than natural occurring calcium fluoride. Sodium fluoride is an extremely toxic substance — just 200 mg of fluoride ion is enough to kill a young child, and just 3-5 grams (e.g. a teaspoon) is enough to kill an adult. Both children (swallowing tablets/gels) and adults (accidents involving fluoridation equipment and filters on dialysis machines) have died from excessive exposure. So claims of no adverse health effects from fluoride ingestion are unfounded.

On a more personal level, it’s a health issue. Is fluoride good for you? Fluoride is a bio-accumulative poison. Half of the fluoride ingested daily is excreted through the kidneys. The remainder accumulates in bones, the pineal and thyroids glands and surrounding tissues. It interferes with hydrogen bonding and inhibits numerous enzymes. The much maligned, late Dr John Yiamouyiannis, PhD, Biochemistry, in his 1983, 1986 and 1993 book, “Fluoride: the Aging Factor” unequivocally showed these relationships.

When combined with aluminum, fluoride interferes with G-proteins, which can interfere with many hormonal processes and has been shown to be mutagenic, causing chromosome damage and blocking DNA repair. Rats that had ingested only 1 ppm of fluoride in their water had morphological changes to their kidneys and brains, and it increased the absorption of aluminum in the brain which has now been undeniably to have a connection to Alzheimer’s disease (Varner 1998).

Animal experiments show that fluoride accumulates in the brain and exposure alters mental behavior in a manner consistent with a neurotoxic agent. Fluoride administered to animals at high doses wreaks havoc on the male reproductive system – it damages sperm and increases the rate of infertility in a number of different species. Rats dosed prenatally demonstrated hyperactive behavior. Those dosed post-natally demonstrated hypo activity (i.e. under activity or “couch potato” syndrome). Dr. Phyllis Mullenix, PhD, Neurotoxicology, Pharmacology, proved these relationships beyond any doubt with her research at Harvard at the the Forsythe Dental Research Institute. When her research was published in a peer reviewed journal, she was fired as Chief Researcher from that Institute.

Fluoride has been demonstrated to increase such problems as depression, fatigue, weight gain, muscle and joint pains, birth defects, increased cholesterol levels, heart disease and it increases the potential for cancer of the liver or kidneys. It causes chronic immune system disorders and impairs the functioning of the thyroid gland. A review of national cancer data in the US by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) revealed a significantly higher rate of bone cancer in young men (osteosarcoma) in fluoridated versus non fluoridated areas (Hoover 1991, Basin 2001).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC 1999, 2001) has now acknowledged the findings of many leading dental researchers, that the mechanism of fluoride’s benefits are mainly topical not systemic. Thus, you don’t have to swallow fluoride to protect teeth. As the benefits of fluoride (if any exist) are topical, and the risks are systemic, it makes more sense, for those who want to take the risks, to deliver the fluoride directly to the tooth in the form of toothpaste. Since swallowing fluoride is unnecessary, there is no reason to force people (against their will) to drink and bathe in fluoridated water. This position was recently shared by Dr. Douglas Carnall, the associate editor of the British Medical Journal.
So why is a dangerous chemical like this allowed to be dumped into our water supplies? Drinking fluoridated water to attempt to prevent tooth decay is akin to drinking sunblock to prevent sunburn.

Fluoride can only be removed by reverse osmosis filtration, activated alumina defluoridation or distillation. So take control of your family’s health and destiny by refusing to ingest this poisonous substance and join a movement in your city to remove it from the water… “In about 60% of 2000 referenda held in the U.S. since 1950, fluoridation has been voted down.”

“Fluoride in water doesn’t protect against cavities. I don’t care if a million dentists believe this to be true, it simply isn’t. Studies on fluoride ingestion prove it. It’s pretty straightforward,” Ellison said. “Those who swallow fluoride do not have fewer cavities than those who do not.” http://www.digitaljournal.com/pr/669838 “Fluoride in Water Can Pose Health Risks,” says People’s Chemist Shane Ellison
“Fluoride dangers are one of the greatest public health threats of modern times.”

Write this simple note to your municipal Councillor:
Dear Councillor,

As a (Canadian citizen, or resident of Ottawa, or, (frequent) visitor to Ottawa), I ask you to please bring an end to the fluoridation of Ottawa’s water supply.

Thank you.

Children at high risk for cavities should be discouraged from eating starchy snacks such as crackers and chips. In fact, one good way to determine if a snack is good for a child is to check their teeth 20 minutes after consumption. If the teeth are still filled with food, the snack should be discontinued.
